Marketing Your Business With Newspaper Inserts

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Marketing is one of your businesses most important tasks. Make sure you are getting your message across.

One great way to do this is to use newspaper inserts in your advertising campaign.

First, decide where you are going to advertise. I use the smaller weekly newspapers instead of the bigger daily papers. The weekly papers are usually much cheaper.

My weekly paper only charges about $40.00 per 1000 inserts.

Another reason to use inserts is that you can target specific zip codes.

For example, in the 78209 zip code you run an advertisement focused on businesses, while running an advertisement targeting residential customers in the 78248 zip code.

This is a powerful method of targeting your marketing messages.

The benefits don’t stop there! With a display ad you only get a small space to promote your products or services. With inserts you get as much space as you need.

You can produce a single double sided page or a multi-page insert. Which do you think has the greatest chance of getting your message to the most customers?

Display Ads All Look the Same

To me, almost all display ads look the same. How do you get your message to stand out from the crowd? You use bold text, borders, and huge headlines work to draw attention to your advertisement. However, they still must compete with every other ad in their section.

Inserts Stand Out

All of these tactics work with inserts, but you have much less competition.

Tip: Use colored paper to make your insert stand out even more!

How do you use inserts to promote your business?

1. Select the markets you desire to target and develop the insert targeting that particular market segment.

2. Locate those markets by zip code.

3. Print the inserts at your local printer.

4. Deliver your inserts to the newspaper and they will insert them into the papers going to the zip codes you select.

For my business, a typical insert campaign looks like this. Five thousand insert divided between three zip codes. Each zip code receives a targeted message printed on bright gold paper with black ink.

The cost is about $80.00 per thousand. Forty dollars to the newspaper and $40.00 to have the inserts printed. I write my own advertising copy. Total cost is about $400.00 per run.

My experience is that I get a much better return with inserts than with display advertising.

The key to an effective marketing campaign is to target your customers with multiple exposures. One shot marketing just doesn’t cut it!

Tip: Create an insert that gives your customers information they want to keep for reference later. Consider a short information booklet to accomplish this. One 11 x 17 inch piece of paper makes an inexpensive, but effective four page booklet! See my article Marketing Your Business with Tips Booklets.

Hair Removal Tips

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Waxing is the one of best method for hair removal. To gain better results from waxing follow the tips given. Prior to waxing, avoid showering and making the hair wet. Water is absorbed by hair to make it soft and less likely to adhere well to the wax. Pulling of hair is easy in case of tough hair. Make sure there is no sensitive to hair removal using waxing in a small area of skin should be tested initially.

Minimum hair length should be 0.5/4 inches long to carry over waxing, if not wait until the hair reaches the minimum length. Wax should be heated carefully and it should not be overheated, so that it doesn’t burn the skin when applying. First you check up the temperature in the small area. In case of unbearable pain and uncomfortable pain, apply a pain cream or a reducing gel available at pharmacists. Before waxing these solutions should be applied 35 to 60 minutes, so the skin is numbed beforehand and insensitive. Always apply the wax in a thin layer, in the direction of the hair growth and peel back with a rapid pace movement close to the skin. To remove excess wax from the skin, clean the skin with a warm moist towel afterwards. Wearing tight clothes over freshly waxed areas are completely avoidable over freshly waxed areas.

7 Reasons Why Press Releases Beat Advertising

Monday, June 9th, 2008

1. PR is cheaper than advertising

Advertising generally costs money. Most small businesses don’t have a huge budget for marketing and a full-page ad in a well-known magazine could easily cost $5000 or more, before the cost of graphics, design etc. How many people will see that ad and how many will remember it? An extended ad campaign would definitely cost more that this with little or no effect. Advertising is more of a one-way communication and the audience is not very involved or attentive. That same money, if invested in PR services, could dramatically impact sales many times and can help launch your new product or maintain your old brands.

2. PR is a tool to reach targeted consumers.

Through advertising you may think you’re targeting carefully when you’re not. Let’s say you’re selling a product to a business audience. An email containing your ad going to a specific list of 100,000 business people is more effective than a general newsletter or going to 100,000 people. PR can do this for you by targeting a specific group to announce the introduction of a new product to which it is of major interest. Through press releases, PR can create a factual, true and interesting message to attract the targeted audience without the high cost of target marketing. PR can get companies, products and services noticed by those who matter for a minimal investment.

3. PR can build long term relations:

A good PR plan can create awareness of the client’s product or services, stimulate sales, facilitate communication, and build relationships between customers and companies and their brands. PR is an ingredient vital to every effective marketing program. PR can effectively build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and the people. PR also has huge potential to strengthen the relationships by sending out signals of new variations of a brand, and by providing the customer with new information.

4. Creativity and a successful PR program go hand in hand

PR is based on identifying critical objectives and that’s what makes it effective. What audiences are most important to reach? What outcomes must be achieved? Does the company want to frame industry issues to create thought leadership or put the competitor on the defensive? The writers and editor’s point of view is the most important part of getting your press release published because they understand their readers. If you get past the editor, you can be assured that your PR program will be a success.

5. PR can is effective in building new brands.

When an objective third party writes an article, the message is more clearly conveyed than if it were simply promoted through advertising. All big brands were built by publicity followed by advertising campaigns. To introduce and grow your brand, you need PR. It is definitely a more cost effective way to gain positive awareness and create a favorable climate for new brands.

6. PR is synonymous with credibility

Many times readers consider ads they read as just exaggerated hype. Advertising controls the message while PR does not, and because of this, PR creates credibility. Advertising is the best-known promotional tool since it is persuasive, people are more skeptical about advertising since the very purpose is to persuade rather than inform. This is why people resist the ads. Most readers are more likely to trust reviewers, columnists, reporters or broadcasters. If you read a review that says that a new restaurant is the best thing in town, there’s some credibility there. We tend to assume that a person who is writing an article is an expert, and that they are an uninterested third party. Credibility is the one thing that can win the customer’s heart and wallet at the same time

7. PR Can Go the Distance

PR can effectively strengthen a company’s position while casting doubt about the competitor. It conducts research to understand the competitors’ strategies, strengths and weaknesses, PR patterns, activities and events, and perceptions about the competitor. PR can expose your company to the masses, quickly increase your sales, and dramatically enhance the image of your business or products.

Lionel Messi – Player Focus

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Another off the Argentine assembly line of “New Maradonas”, Lionel Messi may be the first to live up to that unfair comparison. Where Javier Saviola, Juan Roman Riquelme and Pablo Aimar have unsurprisingly failed to match HIS high standards despite initial promise, Messi has shown that even at a young age he is able to carry the weight of expectant teammates and a nation on his shoulders.

Credit must also be given to his Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard for not rushing him into a starting place at Barcelona he is more than ready to hold.

“It is clear Messi is a talent, a future player, but I ask that everyone continues supporting him when he is out of the team because he is still very young.” Rijkaard said in a recent interview. He continued:

“I’m convinced about him because I know he isn’t paying attention to all the speculation in the media.”He prefers to do his talking on the pitch.”

In fact his three goals and one assist in nine league starts for Barcelona this season to add to his goal and assist in the UEFA Champions League back up his coaches claim, and at 18 years young we are only just starting to see glimpses of his enormous potential. Messi states:

“I want to keep on learning and I hope things go well for me. The thing is to help the team as much as possible.”

These are the words of a young man with a focused head on his shoulders and more importantly good advisors around him. How many times have we seen the vultures swoop in on young prodigies sweet talking them and their parents into committing career suicide by sulking and demanding more playing time only to become no more than a trivia question five years down the road.

With the World Cup in Germany swiftly approaching Lionel Messi will definitely be one to watch if selected for national duty.

Enrique Domnguez, Messi’s former coach said “He could do things with the ball that defied the laws of physics. The only other person I have ever seen do that was Diego Maradona”.

Let us all recall that Maradona himself did not come into his own until the 1986 World Cup in Mexico despite being tipped for great things in Spain four years prior. That World Cup was a general disappointment for Maradona as well as Argentina. Messi will be three years younger than Maradona was in his first World Cup appearance and it is important that we all allow Lionel to continue developing at his current pace without placing on him too much pressure for a teenager to handle. For his part Messi must maintain his enthusiasm and work ethic that has so far impressed his coaches and peers. If he can do that then the sky is indeed his limit.

Is Technology Isolating Us From Friends and Family?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Psychologists have done studies on the effects of internet chats on people. The number of cases going to doctors are increasing day by day. People who are shy and reticent in the real world, log on chats to vent out their frustration. They assume pseudo identities and assume a new life, sitting hours at a stretch. These cases have been causes of many marital problems and divorces. Rejection by cyber friends has also been a big reason of depression cases. It only serves to increase loneliness which has been proved.

Even internet surfing, to some has become an addiction. Hours and hours are spent online with no care of the real world. Similarly with online games. People suddenly become recluse. They ignore their home and family. Hanging out is no longer for them. This phenomenon is real in many places. Loneliness creates frustration with the outside world. A gregarious attitude is lost. Everything is a product of new and latest innovations of technology companies. And they are only researching and testing for more of these gadgets.

Gone is the time of 70’s and 80’s when saturday nights were nights with friends, hanging out. Nowadays you also hear about online meetings with friends using instant messengers. SMS has reduced the need of speaking on the phone. People are no longer as outgoing and socialable as they were before. Even movies and concerts can be downloaded home on demand preventing the need to go out. In fact, you can even work from home and not even go to office. Everything you need to shop, can be ordered online or on the telephone.

Talking of education, even graduate degrees can be obtained sitting at home. There is no need to attend lectures and classes in universities. There’s no need to stay in a college dormitory with new friends. Our old favourite TV started the couch potato idea. Studies showed people all over US were becoming obese and lethargic. Children instead of playing football outdoors were watching inane programs for long hours. All this only promotes loneliness.

Some years back, there was this man who named himself dotcomguy. He stayed inside a room for an entire month with just a computer and a net connection. Everything he needed or wanted to do could be done or bought with the help of the net. Publicity and encouragement were given to him as if he were doing a great job. Maybe he demonstrated the power of the computer- nothing more.

Man is a social animal-a cliche and a truth. He always needed company of others for happiness. Marriage is a symbol of the same- the need for a companion. Current technological progress is only undermining the same. Its creating hermits everywhere. There may be a day, when no one needs to come out of home. Now, even marriages are webcast, so that relatives can bless the couple online without needing to come over. What more can they think of?

I write for eCards on valentine, eCards for various Expressions and screensavers.

Profitable Fundraisers Require Organizational Skills

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Fundraising has become an integral part of our society and non-profit groups are continually searching for new and unique ways of raising money. There are a multitude of fundraising products on the market and silent auctions seem to be a preferred fundraising event.

Silent and live auctions are a great opportunity to make tremendous profit with little or no costs involved. The key element is to make money – not spend money – and get everything donated. For example, a great donation is a signed sports jersey – with passionate fans in the audience you have a license to print money!

A profitable auction, or any other fundraising endeavor, depends on how well the event is organized. The canvassing and collection of auction items is not difficult, but it does require a certain amount of discipline and structure. This is where organizational skills come in handy – an appropriate introduction letter and auction donation contract is imperative. In reality, it makes no difference whether the fundraiser is a potluck dinner in the school gymnasium or a black tie affair at the golf & country club – the same principles and organizational skills apply to all silent auction events.

Organizing such events need not be complicated, however, it is important to have a Chair who will oversee every aspect of the fundraiser and ensure everything is on track and running smoothly. The proper set up of auction tables, choice of emcee, venue selection and check-in/cash-out procedures are a few topics that require special consideration and organization.

Volunteers are often hard to acquire, but once a core group has been assembled, it is important that the entire committee be organized. The Chair should hold frequent meetings to ensure volunteers are well informed and up to speed with their duties. A good rule of thumb is to lead by example! If the Chair is organized and has everything under control, a profitable silent auction will be the end result.

Best Tablet PC

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The race for becoming the “best tablet PC” is on. There are no clear verdicts, as technology is a dynamic thing that keeps on changing. Moreover, the issue is quite subjective. There are a number of different models of Tablet PCs, and a wide range of additional software and hardware pieces that enhance or modulate the functioning of a tablet PC. So what might be “best” for a student might not be good enough for a doctor.

A number of hybrid models are also coming up. These models can work as a PDA, mobile phone and tablet PC. Some models are convertible. There are many such categories. It is a complex task to compare the functioning of such equipment to declare which is the best model.

However, a user can choose the best tablet PC to suit his needs by looking out for certain features in a tablet PC. These features include high-speed processors, sufficient storage space in the hard disk, the latest upgraded versions of software, long battery life, wireless compatibility, the capacity to take speech inputs, and the weight and size of the screen.

Second- and third-generation tablet PCs are now available on the market. They are more advanced in terms of technology, and more effective in terms of functioning, than the first-generation tablet PCs. But those who have the latter can transform their tablet PCs by equipping them with certain accessories. A wide range of accessories is available on the market now, which can completely transform your ordinary old tablet PC into a modern machine that meets all your personal requirements. These accessories can also be used with the latest models of tablet PCs, to make them even more effective.

Tablet PC provides detailed information on Tablet PC, Tablet PC Reviews, Tablet PC Software, Best Tablet PC and more. Tablet PC is affiliated with PDA Pocket PCs.

Good Governance

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I well remember during my first working visit to Africa, nearly twenty years ago, that on discussing the visible corruption where I was working, a young African said to me, ‘but of course you don’t have any corruption in your country, do you?’ I gently told him, yes we do, but on the whole, there isn’t much publicity about such things.

Now we are in the year 2005 with vastly expensive computer systems, layer upon layer of audit and inspection, risk management, good governance and compliance, not to mention Tony and Gordon, and waste, poor management and corruption have been minimized – haven’t they? Well if you have been on holiday on Mars for a while, you might think so, but those of us who operate at ground floor level know that this is just not the case.

During the last eighteen months I have carried out several investigations relating to good governance, compliance and fraud. My work has highlighted how easy it is for public and voluntary bodies to become complacent ‘because they have the necessary safeguards and systems in place’. In principle quite frequently they do, but in practice things are often substantially different due to indifferent management, the passage of time, changes in personnel, failure to re-set targets, and a ridiculous optimism ‘that we don’t have corruption in our organization’.

I have to respect confidences in this paper, so some of the information I present is very condensed, but I trust I shall encourage you to think about some of the points which I raise below:

Are you using your computer system to bring together what might appear to be unrelated sets of information? For instance, have you looked at who is getting local tax rebate, against the granting of planning permissions to those same people? Do they continue to get rebate after they have sold off part of their garden? Or have they given the land to relatives for natural care and affection?

Are you sure that in your firm you do not have anyone who is related to, or in a relationship with, an important person working directly or indirectly with the same body? Recently, I happened to glance at the front cover of an annual report showing the auditor’s name. How strange, I thought, that is the same name as the Chief Executive – they couldn’t be related, could they? Yes it turned out that they could!

What about mail which comes in to the office in electronic form? Do you know who is receiving what? Is anyone using email to agree something which commits your organization to possibly unauthorized expenditure? In addition, is your email system being flooded because everyone is copying everything to everybody?

If you are a grant-paying body, are you certain that all of the grants are paid to the correct subsidiary organization? If you say yes, and your evidence is that there is a paper on file which says £123 has been paid over to the XYZ community organization, does that give you sufficient confidence in the security of the system? I doubt it.

If you work for a small to medium size body, particularly in the community/voluntary sector, do you have a qualified accountant to look after your finances, or perhaps an honorary treasurer who is a qualified accountant? If you don’t then senior management and board members may be left feeling tremendously exposed should some malpractice be going on.

One of the main findings from my work, is that many organizations have very little idea of what their staff actually spend their time on. Do the bosses really know what they are doing with their time? If there is no time management/recording system to inform management, then there is more than a possibility that staff are wasting some of their time. Is there any difference between wasting time and stealing money or supplies?

I hope that this short note will have made you think. I believe that despite all the progress on good governance, which I very much support, employers must come right down to the ground floor level to ensure that they have adequate security and protection at all levels at all times.

David Clement is the author of this article “Good Governance” and Chairman of the Software Development Business Company Systems Network Limited http://www.systemsnetwork.co.uk/
