Missouri Valley Update (Feb. 6)

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

My prowess in the Mo Valley continued last week with a 2-1 effort, and a 70% ATS record on the year with my specialty conference, which continues to pay huge dividends by keying in on 3 to 4 games a week in this mid-major conference. Creighton made a huge move last week and is in a 3-way tie with Northern Iowa (who Creighton swept this season), and surprising Wichita State, who I said early on was going to be a sleeper this year in this conference. I will again highlight a few teams and trends for this weeks upcoming action in the Missouri Valley.

Creighton- Last week was a defining week for Creighton, and they continue to dominate people in Omaha at the Quest Center, downing Wichita State and Northern Iowa, and the Jays now stand at 12-0 at home, but still 3-5 on the road, although an OT win Saturday at Drake as 3 point chalk was a big win them. Scoring 72 ppg at home and allowing 59, puts them as the team to beat on the road if you are an opponent coming into Omaha. Games this week at Evansville and then a homer against rival Southern Illinois round out the Blue Jays week, and I expect them to go 2-0 in those games and continue to be a serious contender for the conference title, and as I have mentioned, head coach Dana Altman is the best coach in this conference and knows who to coach in big games. If the line is under 4 or 5 in that Southern Illinois game, take a close look at Creighton on this upcoming Saturday (Feb 11th).

Northern Iowa- Put the Panthers down as a 2 time loser to Creighton, but look for the Cats to do some clawing back to respectability this week, and they kicked it off after that loss to Creighton with a 33 point home win against Indiana State. Allowing only 58 ppg on the season and a 8-3 road record will get you some attention, and the Panthers cracked the Top 25 last week until a loss at Creighton, but still they are the only 20 game winner in the conference, standing at 20-4 overall for the season. A key game on Tuesday with Wichita State at home, where they are out-scoring opponents 15 ppg on the season and sit at 12-1 SU. This is a team to contend with all season, and I expect them to be very tough to beat down the stretch.

Wichita State- The Shockers continue to impress with only 1 returning starter this season, but they are well coached, play some of the best defense in the league and are off a huge win at home in OT against Southern Illinois. The key for the Shockers has been their play on the road this year, at 6-3 SU, and that will be put to the test this week in a Tuesday Night tilt at Northern Iowa, as the Shockers are tied with them for a 3 way deadlock for the conference lead. The Shockers got hammered by the Panthers at home 75-61, and now travel to a ticked off Panther team to play the rubber match, and I am not sure the Shockers will win that game, as they lost as a 1 point chalk in game 1, and I doubt the oddsmakers will have them any less that a 5 or 6 point dog in that key game. Look for them to fall on Tuesday the 7th.

Bracket Busters- 10 teams from the Mo Valley are in the bracket buster round in the NCAA Feb 18th. As I have mentioned, the Mo Valley is being recognized as one of the best mid-majors around and have sent 2 teams to the NCAA Dance the past 6 years in a row. Some trends I have noticed, and a go against scenario to keep your eye on, is Illinois State, who are 0-7 on the road and 3-4 ATS, getting outscored 68-53 on the average. I would keep a close eye on the Redbirds and those lines while they travel, especially against the Top 4 in this conference, you might grab a winner on the home favorite. Oddsmakers have also adjusted the lines, as far as totals with Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State), as they are consistently going under, but anytime the line is 140 or less they are worth a look on the overs, as they have a high flying offense and play little defense. Until next week, keep an eye on my featured plays in this conference, there is ample opportunity to win in this conference and the lines rarely move much.

Is It Possible For A Piece Of Direct Mail To Induce A Heart Attack?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

As I opened my mailbox, I did what most folks do when they get their mail…

I turned into a humanized version of a mail sorting machine. Within an instant, I have already identified junk-mail, a few bills and a stack that requires further investigation to determine if it’s worth keeping or belongs in the trash can.

But today was no ordinary mail day. Today, I was given a mild heart-attack by what I found in my mailbox.

As I sorted through the week-old stack of mail, an envelope jumped out at me and instantly had my full attention. Not only did it have my full attention, but it had already created an emotional response within my body. My heart rate raised, blood vessels tightened and my breathing pattern increased.

I’m not exaggerating here, this is 100% true…

The envelope had a logo that is instantly recognizable to any grown adult in America. The envelope appeared to be from the I.R.S.

Since it wasn’t tax season and I own a business, I instantly thought I was being audited. Now, I have absolutely nothing to hide, but the thought of the time and hassle an audit would take sent shivers up my spine.

Here’s where this gets interesting - do you remember in my previous messages when I discussed the first job of marketing? Interrupting or getting attention through the use of the brain’s automatic search engine called the Reticular Activation System (RAS)?

Well, this story illustrates that process perfectly. See, if you remember, the RAS is constantly looking for items of priority around us. In other words, things we really want, things we really want to avoid, things that are dangerous, familiar or problematic.

The I.R.S. looking logo falls front and center into the “Problematic” zone.

When this happens, it’s impossible to ignore taking some sort of action.

Unfortunately for most businesses that spend their hard earned dollars on advertising and do a decent job on the “attention” step, the next action is usually a pitch into the trash can or ignorance of the remainder of the message.

But before I continue on that subject, let me finish this story because it illustrates a very, very, very important point in sales and marketing.

As I opened the envelope with hope that I wasn’t being audited by Uncle Sam, I quickly realized that I’d just fallen victim to a false alarm. The ad was from - get this - Parenting Magazine! Needless to say I was relieved, but ticked off at the same time.

See, the creative geniuses at Parenting Magazine thought they were being super-sneaky by making the envelope appear like it was coming from the I.R.S. But, like so many other advertisers, they neglected to consider what happens when the recipient figures out they’ve just been duped.

Do they think that evokes a positive emotion? One that makes me think: “Boy, that sure was clever, just for their cleverness, I’m going to subscribe to their magazine!”? Do they really believe that their prospects are so dumb that they can be tricked? If you think about it, it’s almost insulting their target market.

Sometimes I wonder…

Has that ever happened to you? I’ll bet it has at one level or another. Most savvy marketers know that they must get attention for their ad to work. This is why you see talking frogs, cute kids, screaming people and other odd things so common in advertising. The advertiser wants your attention and most do a great job of getting that far.

But that’s where it all falls apart. The instant a prospect figures you out, your chances of success are reduced faster than you can imagine.

Interruption only lasts for a few seconds, you now need to engage them into the remainder of the advertisement.

Very rarely can this be done when you use false alarms like Parenting Magazine did. The real secret is interrupting with a headline or opening statement that is RELEVANT to your product/service.

In your case, interrupt them based on problematic situations or desires surrounding self-storage.

To make this important point clear, allow me to use one more example so you understand. If you authored a book called “How To Make $1 Million in 30 Days Or Less”, what are you going to write about? Cooking? Parenting? Cars?

I hope not…

Of course you’d write about the art of making money right?

What if you purchased a book about making money and when you opened it up, you read a bunch of cooking advice? You wouldn’t read that book for long would you?

Advertising and Marketing are no different. Whether it be direct mail, radio, T.V., Billboards, Internet or print, you must interrupt based on relevant hot buttons in the RAS and then ENGAGE or gain INTEREST based on fulfilling on your interrupting promise.

So, the first 2 of 4 steps to the marketing code are: Attention/Interrupt, then Engage/Interest.

The next step is called Decide/Educate. This is what to do after you have their attention and they’re engaged, ready to read or listen to your message.

John Kerry as a Prosecutor?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Prosecutors with political ambitions are known to modify the truth or withhold evidence in order to get a conviction. It is so common in fact that the greater the political ambitions the greater the unethical ness of their tenure as a prosecutor. It is for this reason that we must do a background on every case that John Kerry falsified as a prosecutor in order to maintain such a high conviction rate. After all political ambitions for President of the United States are great indeed an there is a significant motivation to cheat? I believe John Kerry kicked his dog and unless he can prove otherwise we ought to make a note of it.

It is not that John Kerry himself is such a bad gentleman, I do not even know him. The problem lies in the fact that almost all District Attorneys and State Attorneys General are somewhat corrupt. Some say they are corrupt because the law makes it tough for them to convict those who are corrupt in the first place. Yet if you think carefully on that logic it holds no water. For instance recently a Federal Agent lied under oath to convict Martha Stewart for supposedly lying while she was not under oath about a crime she did not commit and was not even a crime at all. This of course is one small example in the annals of history, albeit a recent one. John Kerry in his recent bid for President had somewhat misrepresented the facts about his bravery in combat and this leads one to question his service as a prosecutor. After all one of his statements and major comments about his experience as a leader was that he had put away people for the rest of their lives while he was a prosecutor. Well, that is good if in fact they were guilty. My question is; “How many people did he put away for the rest of their lives who were innocent?” in order to further his personal political ambitions. We see many others like Elliot Spitzer filing cases against companies and persons simply to allow for a fishing expedition. We need to ask ourselves is this the type of man you want in office? Is John Kerry really fit to lead. I ask the question and without attack on my character I want the truth about John Kerry, I want this question answered. The reason being I see we that the recent John Roberts nominee for the Supreme Court handed over 38,000 pages of documents from his work under Ronald Reagan. I do not see the same level of transparency with Kerry who is busy collecting monies this week in Seattle for another run at the oval office; the same one he threw his war metals over the fence at. Perhaps a crooked prosecutor is a necessary evil in our quest to curb crime in our civilization. My question is do we necessarily want such evil in the oval office.

Answer the question, dump the rhetoric, we need a national discussion on prosecutors and political ambitions in this country and we need it now.

Get Your Payday Loan Online

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The process of applying for a payday loan has become easier now that these types of loans are available online. Obtaining a cash advance has become much quicker now that applications are processed over the internet. In a few minutes time, you can be approved for a cash advance and your money can be in your checking account the next day, helping you out in a financial emergency.

Payday loans can go by several names, such as cash advance, check loan, or post-dated loan. Despite there difference in name, they all are the same type of short-term loan. Depending on your financial situation the amounts may vary from $100 to $1000. Payday loans are meant to cover small financial emergencies, and the cost of payday loans, in general, is less than the cost of late charges or bounced checks. The loans are secured by your next payday. They are very short term in nature and require pay back within 30 days. If you need more than a month to pay the loan back this, usually, can be done, but you run the risk of incurring additional fees.

The application for a payday loan can be filled out from your home. Through an online website, you enter certain data such as contact information and employment history. The minimum age to be eligible for a payday loan is 18 years and you have to have been employed for at least 90 days. Within several minutes your application will be reviewed and you will receive notice if you are approved. With an approved application, you will need to supply your lender with your checking account routing number, so they know where to deposit your money. When you transfer the money using a wire transfer, your money will typically be available the next day.

Repayment of your payday loan will also be handled online. Most payday companies offer at least three payment options, to be paid on your due date: pay only finance charges, pay the whole amount, or pay a portion of it. You can contact the payday loan companies through a variety of means. Typically, lenders can be reached through phone or email. Increasingly, payday loan questions are answered by fax and/or instant messaging. Payday loan websites will also post general information, including their rates, payment options, and answers to frequently asked questions.

Year-End Fundraising Letter Appeals: 10 Tips to Give Them a Boost at Christmas

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

If your non-profit organization is like many others, you receive half or more or your contributed income at the end of the year as part of what used to be called the “Christmas Appeal.” In recent years it has come to be known as, in politically correct North America at least, the “Year-End Appeal” or “Seasonal Appeal.”

Which means your year-end appeal
letter can make or break your year, financially speaking. Here are some tips on
how to craft a winning year-end fundraising letter appeal package.

1. Keep it simple
One non-profit ministry that I shall not name mailed their year-end appeal
letter in a poly bag along with their donor newsletter. They had been late in
getting their newsletter in the mail and so, to save on postage, they mailed it
along with the seasonal appeal letter. The campaign bombed, and bombed big.
Donors, as far as we could tell, read the full-colour newsletter and ignored the
letter that came with it. So my advice is this: keep your year-end appeal simple
and focused on one goal: securing a year-end donation.

2. Be creative
You will be competing with other organizations in the mailbox. Every charity
sends an appeal at Christmas. So stand out by mailing something creative. When I
worked with Doctors Without Borders as their fundraising letter writer, they
mailed a Christmas card to donors that donors then signed and returned to the
organization with their gift. Doctors Without Borders forwarded the card to a
volunteer doctor or nurse who was serving overseas, and whose name was on the
card. The cards were greatly appreciated by the volunteers (many of whom were
homesick at that time of year). The cards also involved donors in a way that
warmed their hearts and motivated them to contribute.

3. Look back with thanksgiving
Use your year-end appeal fundraising letter as a way to thank donors for
their support during the past year. Don’t list the names of every staff person
you hired or promoted, or go on at length about happenings at head office.
Instead, tell at least one heart-warming or compelling story that illustrates in
vivid terms how your donors’ gifts changed lives. Use quotes from the people
that you serve wherever possible. They add credibility and human interest to
your letter.

4. Look ahead with anticipation
Also use this Christmas appeal letter to present your vision for the coming
year. Show donors how their gift this “Holiday Season” will make a difference
next year for your organization and the people you serve.

5. Use a seasonal theme
Try to tie your appeal to the season. Giving, presents, exchanging
greetings, snow, “goodwill toward man” and other themes are popular at
Christmastime. If you can tie your appeal to an emotion or sentiment that is
already prevalent at the end of the year, and do so in a relevant way without
being overly sentimental, do so.

6. Accentuate the positive
Please don’t appeal for donors to get your books out of the red and into the
black. If you have a negative cash flow at year-end, don’t ask donors to correct
it. They will see your predicament as your fault. Donors are not motivated to
eliminate debt (unless it’s Third World debt). But they are motivated to change
the world through a gift to your organization. So present your appeal as an
opportunity for the donor rather than a rescue operation for your chief
financial officer.

7. A special word for Christian charities
Avoid the “God gave us an unspeakable Gift and so should you” approach in
your Christmas appeal letter. Instead, show in concrete terms how you will use a
donor’s gift to further the work that your Christian donors care about, using a
biblical theme if possible.

I Can Feel My Baby Move! Prenatal Developmental Movement and Parental Response

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

“The embryo is the human being expressing itself.”
Jaap Van Der Wal, MD

“I think I can feel my baby move,” Whitney said, her dewy blue eyes wide with anticipation. Her voice rose at the end, turning her sentence into a query. She was a few weeks shy of the second trimester of her second successful pregnancy. Exuberantly curious, she sought validation for her awareness. Whitney was more confident with this baby than her first, but on the issue of whether or not she in fact could detect her baby’s movement, she was uncertain.

The delivery of Whitney’s first child was by caesarean section. At the time, and now in retrospect, she questioned the procedure. It had evoked a prolonged and recurring experience of loss. She nstead of reacting to it.

Moments later Whitney determined that only she could address her uncertainty about her baby’s movement. When she inquired inside, the answer was definitely, yes, she could feel her baby move. In her first pregnancy, she would have accepted her doctor’s response. Having traversed the painful territory of post-partum depression that she now correlated specifically with the unnecessary caesarean, Whitney had become much more confident in her feminine wisdom. She could honor her hormonally endowed attunement to herself and her child. She was alert to her own tendency to collude in an institutionalized disempowerment of mothers.

As she reflected further on Dr. Carlson’s response, Whitney wondered what kind of relationship she could have with a doctor who did not trust a mother’s experience. Whitney dialogued with her unborn child. Silently, but with passion, she said to her baby, “I recognize your movement and I love it! I’m sorry I was not more confident earlier.” Her baby moved, subtly but clearly, spreading out, stretching with relief in utero.

EARLY MOVEMENT

“The growing gestures of the embryo and the fetus are the gestures of the soul.”
Dr. Erich Blechschmidt

“Movements of the embryo and fetus are a fundamental expression of early neural activity,” says embryologist Jan Nijhuis in his groundbreaking book Fetal Behavior. “The fetus of 8-10 weeks post-menstrual age moves spontaneously in utero under normal circumstances.”

Prenatal movement in the first trimester, and then the patterns of movement that form in the second trimester, are the expression of the developing baby’s nervous system. This primary neurological unfolding is nourished and enhanced by parental awareness, dialogue and subtle touch on the mother’s body that communicates to the baby. The entire family can participate in this encouragement. The knowledge of how to do this is inherent in each of us. It is part of the magnificent design of the human being. Excellent education is now available to stimulate and sustain this natural wisdom. Awakening to, trusting and acting upon our innate human connection is the joy of parenthood.

Prenatal movement is preparation for neonatal activity. It is also warm-up for the marathon of labor and delivery. It is designed to result in the baby’s thrilling victory of entry into the arms of a world already sensed and perceived.

Movement patterns in prenates are replicated in neonates, demonstrating the continuity of neural behavior. The human fetus sleeps, breathes moves, eliminates, and feels, sees, cries, initiates and responds. He or she is acutely sensitive, as a result of constantly expanding neurological capacities, to the surrounding environment and its vicissitudes.

The prenate communicates its experiences the only way it can: through motility. Eye movement, heart-rate, respiration, gestures, and elimination patterns speak volumes about the individual prenatal world. The patterns that these expressions make, when attended to, add texture to our understanding of the quality of prenatal life. They also give us our first insights into who the unique being is within its mother’s body.

Regularity of movement can be a sign of health whereas deceleration or lack of movement can signal distress or concern. Certain fetal movements may convey discomfort. By noticing movements or their absence, the family can come to know its new arrival and begin, well before birth, to integrate the baby into the family. Prenatal consciousness is neurologically organized to be present, alert and receptive. The unborn baby delights in recognition.

Whitney had an unforgettable experience of this when she became ill during her second trimester. A terrible virus hit Whitney’s family hard. They were housebound and unable to function. The baby’s movement was significantly reduced until Whitney came out of her fevered trance.

“I know you are concerned,” Whitney said, as she lay in bed. “You are so caring and we are so connected to you. I am sorry I was too weak to include you, but now I want to reassure you. We will all get better soon. Don’t fret. I’ve been worried myself and that’s why I forgot to talk to you.”

By the next day Whitney felt movement in her womb again. The comforting rhythmic presence of this life she had welcomed in reminded her of how much she had missed contact with the newest addition to her family. As she recovered, Whitney felt she now knew more about the baby she was carrying. This child was engaged with all of them. She talked to her family about her discoveries. They acknowledged the compassion of their new arrival who became still so as not to further burden them. They were truly a family of four now.

WHO IS THE BABY IN UTERO?

“The human embryo is a coherent whole, a unity of form, shape and function, interacting with its environment.”
Jaap Van Der Wal, MD

The question of whom and what the baby in utero actually is and what he or she is capable of doing can best be answered by a respectful collaboration between scientists, parents and people who remember their own prenatal lives. Optimally, these three categories can be combined. Scientists, like me, who are passionate about the role and function of very early life in holistic healthcare, are building the case to demonstrate that prenatal life is, in fact, the basis of all health.

Immune function, structural development, spiritual wellbeing, relational health, confidence, and the capacity to respond to change and threat in a balanced way are all formed by what transpires in utero. Embryology bears this out. Of all the populations that will make the best use of this information, parents, I believe, are the most significant.

When we recognize the power and function of the precious formative primal period and educate broadly and appropriately about it, including educating youth who are the parents of the future, we will be making a decisive contribution to the continuity of civilization.

The personality of the unborn baby is present and engaged with its family from virtually the moment of conception, and some believe even before. The baby is not only interacting, he or she is a full time student, constantly learning and creating the blueprint for a lifetime of physical health, relationships and motivation. Honoring this can decisively shift disturbing trends in violence and disease.

COMMUNICATION IS THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN RELATIONSHIP

“Embryology is an ongoing process. It is a lifetime of communication through the body, through movement, and through partnership.”
Stephanie Mines, Ph.D.

All relationships flourish with authentic and frequent communication. This is as true for prenates as it is for husband and wife, and for parents and children of all ages.

I am reminded of a story reported to me by a young friend who attended a conference where insights into prenatal health were discussed. He was inspired by what he heard. Soon after, he discovered that friends of his had been told that their baby was breach and that a caesarean was scheduled. This young man immediately went to their home, sat in front of the mother’s pregnant belly, and begged and pleaded with the baby to turn. He spoke with full commitment, faith and insistence. The baby turned and was delivered vaginally.

What does embryology say about the prenate’s ability to hear and respond to auditory communication?

Neonates as well as prenates, until relatively recently, were regarded as being deaf as well as mute. Beginning in 1977, however, research demonstrated that the fetus responds to sound from at least 12 weeks in utero and perhaps sooner. Certain sounds, like the mother’s heartbeat, elicit strong responses. The mother’s voice is decidedly heard, as well as the voices of others in the environment. This is supported by the discovery that neonates prefer the sound of their mother’s voice to other sounds.

Auditory sensory mechanisms begin developing during the fourth and fifth week in utero and continue to completion by about the 25th week. At the early stages, however, the baby can hear. A study involving invasive sound at less than 24 weeks of gestation revealed that after hearing a loud and shrill noise that evoked initial dramatic fetal movement, the fetus stopped responding completely. The overwhelming invasion resulted in fatigue and collapse. The fetus learned it was powerless to stop the invasion. The method of the study disturbs me but I hope we will learn from this and stop such painful experiments. However, we can take this knowledge and use it to protect our own prenates from auditory assault!

FETAL LEARNING

“The fetal environment is not one of sensory deprivation as was previously believed, but rather one of richness. There is little doubt that the fetus does learn whilst in the womb.”
Dr. Frank Hepper

Visual information, like sound, is mediated by the mother’s body. Through her, the fetus watches events unfold, and has the ability to associate these events. In addition, the retention of prenatal learning (such as identification of the mother’s voice and the neonate’s ability to choose the mother’s voice from the voices of others), indicates that there is memory in utero. This memory influences later social interactions that rely on attunement to others. What the prenate learns promotes or discourages later bonding and attachment.

How do babies reveal their memories post-natally? Long term studies conducted by Italian psychologist Alessandra Piontelli and published in her book From Fetus to Child show that babies who are frightened and insecure in utero and who demonstrate this through their behavioral states, do the same thing at five years of age and older. Memories are displayed in relationships, play, illnesses, sleep patterns and dreams. Children rely on their parents to pay attention to these expressions and help them to understand what they mean.

Whitney’s experience of her first son’s memories of his caesarean birth supports this theory. In the midst of storytelling, Timmy said “Will our new baby have to wait to come out instead of pushing, the way I did, Mommy?” At first Whitney stared at her son in amazement, and then she acknowledged his wisdom, just as she had learned to acknowledge her own.

“Was waiting hard for you?” she asked her son. “It was very hard,” Timmy replied. “I don’t want my baby to have to wait.” “OK,” Whitney said, “I’ll do my best so there will be no waiting this time.”

My own second daughter’s accusation, when she was twelve years old, that I “really wanted a boy” (a truth I had almost forgotten) is my personal substantiation of the prenatal capacity to experience, to know, and to remember.

BIRTH: THE FULFILLMENT OF PRENATAL LEARNING AND EMBRYOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

“It is the fetal nervous system that integrates all kinds of sensory and physiological information to judge when it is time to be born.”
Lise Eliot, Ph.D.

Whitney learned how her child’s embryological behavioral states continued into the birthing process when she went into labor. The process slowed just when it should have intensified, causing even her midwife to consider going to the hospital. It was deja vu for Whitney and her family. Everyone was recalling Dr. Carlson’s cautionary words when the family declared their intention to deliver at home. “Vaginal deliveries after caesareans are not recommended,” she had said, sternly.

“It’s OK,” Whitney told her family and midwife, turning the tables on her team. Weren’t they supposed to be reassuring her?

“My baby is just concerned,” she declared, smiling. “We need to have a conversation.” Her body provided Whitney with the truth she trusted. Her baby could and would decide the time of birth.

Whitney closed her eyes and commenced an internal dialogue in which she encouraged her child to continue to journey forward and inquired about what the difficulty might be. Her communion was a show stopper for everyone.

“What’s he saying?” Timmy blurted out, unable to control himself. He had always known he had a brother in there!

“He says that he doesn’t know if we will have time for him because we are all so busy. He’s not sure we really want him,” Whitney said softly, looking directly at her husband.

“Is that just you talking?” Blake asked, dumfounded.

“He’s been listening, watching and learning,” Whitney answered, her face radiant in the greatest certainty she had ever known.

“OK,” Blake said, tears streaming down his face. “I’ll spend more time at home. I really want to.” By this time he was sobbing.

The baby’s response was the biggest contraction Whitney had ever felt. Within thirty minutes their baby was born. They named him Micah, the merciful messenger.

There’s a theater with an 800-person capacity, with a variety of entertainment offered through the week.

There are two other major casinos in the Bahamas. These are the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort and Casino and the Crowne Plaza Golf Resort and Casino at the Royal Oasis in Freeport While opinion varies as to which of the three are the best, most people do manage to try out all three.

However, nightlife in the Bahamas isn’t just about gambling the night away in the glitter and gleam of the casinos. There are a variety of nightclubs, discos and bars, some open all night long.

One of the all-nighters is Club Waterloo, located on East Bay Street on New Providence Island. Housed in what was once a grand colonial mansion, there is one main bar, and five smaller bars. Each of the smaller bars has its own specialty and style. Among these smaller bars is Shooters Sports Bar, a Bicardi Bar, which is self-explanatory, and an outdoor, poolside bar. The cover charge is high, up to $30 on weekend nights, but in reality, you’ll rarely pay that much. Many taxi drivers sell what are called visitors’ passes that reduce the cover charge to a much smaller $5. This spot attracts a mixed crowd that typically includes locals and vacationers from Europe and the Americas.

Club 601 is another all-night spot on new Providence Island. It is a disco, and the music is usually of an international flavor, just like the crowd it attracts nightly. Other nightlife favorites in the Bahamas include the Blue Bee Bar on Great Abaco Island and Senor Frog’s at the British Colonial Hilton, at 1 Bay Street in Nassau, New Providence Island. Senor Frog’s tends to attract a young and energetic crown, though people of all ages enjoy the karaoke nights.

As in most of the most popular vacation destination, the nightlife scene in the Bahamas is interesting, exciting and active. You are sure to have a good time if you exercise a bit of common sense, caution and courtesy. Whether you choose a quiet bar tucked away in a lovely island corner, or dance all night at one of the discos or gamble until the dawn in one of the fabulous casinos, the Bahamas will offer you a memorable nightlife experience.
